It was more focused on a theme, and usually restricted to one color, allowing the player who purchased it to get packs that had a greater number of cards that could go straight into their deck

Quag Feast Quag Feast will never be the coolest card in your deck, but cheap, synergistic removal that scales with the game is so incredible that I cant imagine building a black self-mill deck without at least a copy
The third choice you have when learning is to simply do nothing
Thespians Stage is only ever as good as what else is on the battlefield, but that usually makes it incredibly powerful
Perhaps you'd prefer something more aggressive, such as doubling your combat phases
